The robot makers at Boston Dynamics have long had a knack for setting the Internet on fire with videos of their creations in action. You might remember their galloping WildCat (seen in action below) from back in 2013. The WildCat was developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, and is capable of running up to 19 mph on flat terrain (all while looking like something out of an Isaac Asimov nightmare).
Your new robot buddy Atlas
In their latest video the company has taken things to a new level, unveiling the latest version of their humanoid Atlas robot. Standing 5’9″ and weighing in at 180 lbs, the Atlas is an electrically-powered, hydraulically-actuated marvel designed for mobile manipulation. It can open doors, lift boxes, and (most impressively of all) maintain its balance when some bully with a hockey stick starts pushing it around.
You can see the new Atlas in all its glory below, and do your best not to imagine how easily something like this could let itself into your house and start bossing you around.
The future is here. Time to invest in robot-bashing hockey sticks.
